Akureyri is a town in northern Iceland, with a population of 17,754 inhabitants (2011). It is a port town, located on the banks of the Glerá river, which flows into the Eyjafjörður fjord, being the fourth largest town in the country, after Reykjavík, Kópavogur and Hafnarfjörður. Akureyri is located 50 km south of the Arctic Circle, offering tourists a starting base to the north, towards Grímsey island or the Aldeyjarfoss and Goðafoss waterfalls and Lake Mývatn.
