What to see in Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires or Ciudad de Buenos Aires is the capital and largest city of Argentina and the second largest metropolitan area in South America, after São Paulo. It is located on the western bank of the Río de la Plata estuary, on the southeastern coast of the South American continent. The Buenos Aires urban agglomeration, which also includes several districts of the city, constitutes the third largest urban agglomeration in Latin America, with a population of nearly 12 million people. Its population is generally made up of Argentines of Spanish or Italian descent, but there are also significant communities of Arabs, Jews, Armenians and Koreans. A small part of the inhabitants have indigenous origins. The majority of the inhabitants are Roman Catholic, with Spanish as their mother tongue. The city of Buenos Aires is not part of the province of Buenos Aires, nor is it the capital of that province, but it is an autonomous district. In 1880, after decades of political disputes and civil war, Buenos Aires was federalised and removed from the province of Buenos Aires. The city's boundaries were enlarged to include the towns of Belgrano and Flores. The 1994 constitutional amendment granted the city autonomy; therefore, the city's name is „Autonomous City of Buenos Aires". The city's citizens elected a mayor for the first time in 1986; previously, the mayor was appointed directly by the President of the Argentine Republic. Text: Wikipedia (ro) — Buenos Aires
