What to see in Istanbul

Istanbul, called Byzantion in Greek antiquity, then, after the year 330 AD, Constantinople — in Greek Κωνσταντινούπολις — was the capital of the Roman Empire, for two short periods between 324-395, of the Eastern Roman Empire, also called the Byzantine Empire by humanist historiography, between 395-1204, of the Latin Empire of Constantinople between 1204-1261, then again of the restored Byzantine Empire, between 1261-1453, and of the Ottoman Empire until the proclamation of the Republic of Turkey, on 13 October 1923. The Eastern Roman Empire began to be called the Byzantine Empire from the 16th century at the initiative of the humanist historian Hieronymus Wolf. Its legendary founder was a certain Byzas from the city of Megara, and when Constantine the Great traced the boundaries of his future capital he encompassed an area of also seven hills, as in the case of Rome. The Turks built a mosque on each hill. Istanbul is the largest urban concentration of Turkey and the only megalopolis in the world stretching over two continents. In old Romanian texts, the city was called Țarigrad, Stanbul, Stambul, the Sublime Porte or the Porte. Officially, the former capital received the Turkish name of Istanbul on 28 March 1930, until then keeping internationally its ancient and traditional name of Constantinople.
